By 2011 James Goodall had closed up shop on the Big Island, and Derek began full time as partner in Kiernan Music. Tax-exempt non-profit public charitable organization Music For Life Foundation. By 2009 the business had outgrown their small storefront/shop, and Kiernan Music moved to a larger space in Old Town Kainaliu.
In the meantime Derek took a job building guitars for James Goodall, and worked in the Kiernan shop on the weekends, where father and son soon began designing and building unique ukuleles, and joined the Big Island Ukulele Guild. Not only is it beautiful as a solo instrument, particularly with Hawaiian music, but it blends nicely with the regular guitar. In 2004, the Kiernan’s moved to the Big Island and after 2 years of doing repairs out of their home, Brian rented a space in Captain Cook, and opened Kiernan Music in April of 2006.
